Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium®, Prilosec®, and Prevacid® are some of the most widely prescribed drugs on Earth. This class of drugs is prescribed for heartburn, indigestion, gastritis and acid reflux with annual sales in excess of thirteen billion dollars. Despite the fact that these drugs have been available to patients for over a decade, in December 2014 the warning labels on these drugs were updated to include warnings that these drugs can cause a serious condition called chronic interstitial nephritis. Recent studies indicate that these drugs can also cause chronic kidney dysfunction, but the warning labels on these drugs have not been updated to include warnings about the risk of development of chronic kidney disease. If untreated, chronic kidney disease can develop into end-stage renal disease. At this point, the kidneys cannot effectively remove waste and excess fluids from the body, and the patient must either have a kidney transplant or go through dialysis. If you or a loved one has ingested PPIs and has been diagnosed with chronic or acute kidney dysfunction, please call the experienced drug and device attorneys at Franklin D.
