Unsafe Medical Devices

It is very common in the modern age to have our bodies implanted with medical devices to aid the functionality of our bodily systems. Surgeons and doctors perform thousands of operations every year that require the use of medical devices such as knee and hip implants, heart devices, and transvaginal mesh. As Americans, we put our trust in these companies to thoroughly test their medical devices and ensure they are safe for sale to the general public.

Unfortunately, every year the FDA is faced with over 200,000 reports of medical devices that have malfunctioned or been the cause of an injury. Sadly, nearly ten percent of these malfunctions or injuries caused by medical devices are fatal.

HIP and KNEE IMPLANTS (Stryker, DePuy, Biomet, Zimmer)

The most commonly reported malfunctions with hip and knee implants arise from the following four procedures and devices: the Biomet system, the Zimmer Duron Cup, the Stryker Rejuvenation, and the DePuy ASR. Nearly a half-million people are estimated to have had metal-on-metal hip implants, and the problems associated with these types of implants are severe. Metal-on-metal hip implants are not only more likely to fail than those implants made of alternative materials, but they are also likely to release tiny metal particles over time due to the grinding of the metal. These metal ion particles can cause inflammation of the bones, tendons, muscles and ligaments inside the hip joint, and can also cause blood poisoning when the metal particles enter the blood stream.

Every year, thousands of women require treatment for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse associated with transvaginal mesh implants. Although the implant is faster and easier than other methods of surgical repair, there can be horrific side effects and malfunctions. Over time, the mesh can degrade causing serious infections, bleeding, and intense pain. These mesh implants can even become loose over time and cause severe damage to the vaginal walls.
