Chantix® Drug Information

Unfortunately, Chantix® (varenicline) has been found to cause a number of serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration Reviewed Chantix® Studies

Approved by the FDA in May 2006, Chantix® is manufactured by Pfizer and is in a class of medications called smoking cessation aids. It works by blocking the pleasant effects of nicotine on the brain. It is an oral medication most often prescribed to patients desiring to quit smoking for varying reasons. According to its clinical pharmocology, Chantix® (varenicline) is basically a nicotine receptor antagonist while simultaneously preventing nicotine binding to the same receptors.

Chantix® (varenicline) Side Effects:

Recent studies reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the use of Chantix® in 700 patients aged 35 to 75 years with stable, documented cardiovascular disease (other than, or in addition to, hypertension) that had been diagnosed at least two months prior to the screening visit. This study showed that certain cardiovascular adverse events including, but not limited to, angina pectoris, non-fatal myocardial infarction, undergoing coronary revascularization and peripheral vascular disease were reported in more patients treated with Chantix® than patients treated with placebo. Further, the FDA reported that some of the Chantix® patients requiring coronary revascularization underwent the procedure as part of management of nonfatal myocardial infarction and hospitalization for angina pectoris.

Potential Plavix® injuries include:

  • Severe Depression
  • Suicide
  • Angina pectoris (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle)
  • Non-fatal or fatal myocardial infarction (heart attack, leading to death or not)
  • Undergoing coronary revascularization (coronary artery bypass surgery)
  • Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) (narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs)
  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs)
  • Death

If you have, or a loved one has, been treated for or developed one or more of these symptoms after taking Chantix® please call (800) 716-9032.
