Lipitor® is the brand name for the drug atorvastatin, a member of the statin class of hypolipidemics. It is a popular prescription medication manufactured by Pfizer that is used to treat high cholesterol. Lipitor® has been linked to some severe, irreversible side effects that can be life threatening.
In 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required Pfizer to update the Lipitor® label to notify consumers that the drug may cause Type 2 diabetes. Prior to 2012, the label failed to warn doctors and patients of the risk of diabetes and the importance of monitoring blood glucose levels. Now, thousands of women who took Lipitor have developed diabetes.
A study published in the Archives of Internal medicine identified a potential link between statins use, which prevents the liver from creating an enzyme that helps the body produce cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes.
