James grew up in Canon City, Colorado, and attended undergraduate college at UCCS where he majored in political science. James put himself through school, working in the IT field, until he decided to attend law school at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. While in law school, James got his feet wet in trial practice winning the Outstanding Advocate Award in his second year of law school as a participant in the Hoffman Cup, a mock trial competition. In his final year of law school, he was recognized as a runner-up for the Dean’s Cup, which is a one day civil litigation competition where students simulate a case from client interview, through trial. Students are assessed for their negotiation skills, client management, and trial preparation. James also completed an externship at Ciancio Ciancio Brown where he practiced generally in civil litigation and got a taste for trial work. While in law school, James continued to work as a legal assistant, and also an office manager for a public adjusting firm where he learned the ropes of insurance coverage. After graduation from law school, he took the Colorado Bar Exam, and came to work for Franklin D. Azar & Associates where he focuses on first party insurance coverage and bad faith claims.
