Zack Balkin was born in Chicago, Illinois, son of renowned personal injury attorney Charles Balkin. His childhood home was next to a nature preserve, while working in the preserve, Zack learned the value of caring for the land as well as looking after preserve inhabitants who could not speak for themselves. This bolstered Zack’s love of the outdoors which led him to the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with a major in Biological Sciences as well as a certificate in business in 2001.
Before law school, he spent time traveling the world, diving the great barrier reef in Australia, snowboarding the mountains of New Zealand, and rebuilding WWII era Harley Davidsons in Tokyo. Upon his return to the United States, he enrolled in Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. There he studied under the watchful eye of Bernard Segal, best known for his work with President John F. Kennedy and the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. Mr. Segal was an incredibly accomplished trial attorney and spent his later years passing his immense knowledge onto his students. After meeting Mr. Segal, Zack knew that his calling was to be a trial lawyer and he flourished in the mock trial environment.
Zack graduated from Law School in 2007 with a Certificate of Specialization with Distinction in Litigation, an award given to those with the highest grades in the program. He was also awarded Witkin Awards for Academic Excellence in Constitutional Law and Legal Research and Writing, given to the top academic in each class.
Upon graduating, Zack moved to Colorado and passed the bar in October of 2007. In December 2008, Zack began his trial career with the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office as a county court Deputy District Attorney. After trying several cases he was promoted into District Court within 6 months. Zack has extensive trial experience including homicides, sexual assaults, child abuse, major assaults, DUI’s, and domestic violence cases. Zack was promoted to Senior Deputy District Attorney in 2012 and Chief Deputy District Attorney in 2014. His tenacity and trial skills allowed him to excel as a prosecutor who is caring and diligent and driven to speak for those who otherwise have no voice in the justice system.
In 2016, Zack left the DA’s office to pursue a career in the field he watched his father practice. He joined Franklin D. Azar and Associates with an abundance of experience in both criminal law and trial practice. Though he did change the path of his career, his focus remains the same, to represent victims and ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
Outside the office you can find him fishing, off-roading, and camping in the summer and snowboarding and hunting in the winter. He is an active board member of the Imagination Library of Denver, which provides free books to children. An avid gardener, Zack shares a community plot with friends, growing their own food over the summer. He’s an aspiring amateur chef, and often forms ideas of how to make world-class dishes with his garden fare on the spot, a testament to his quick-thinking, an important requirement for any trial attorney. He is joined in this adventure called life by his two furry pals, Momo and Dave.
Zack is licensed to practice in Colorado and Illinois as well as the 10th Federal District and the Supreme Court of the United States.
